Rev, Dev and… Mot-ev?


Do copywriters have a charmed life?

After all, there’s only so many hours that anyone can engage in a creative act per day.

Which means most of us can only spend 3-5 hours a day writing before we start seeing diminishing returns.

But appearances can be very deceiving.

First of all – that assumes we only write and don’t have to worry about ALL the other aspects of running a business: admin, client calls, strategy, networking, etc.

And although there are only so many hours we can spend writing…

The truth is that most of us almost never fully switch off.

We’re constantly seeing things that pull us back into a piece of copy we’re writing for our clients, for a campaign, or for a funnel we’re building…

This is why so much of my “writing” happens away from the desk –

– when I’m walking, reading or resting.

My brain relaxes…

I drift off…

And then…

Suddenly…

I have a big “AHA” moment…

At which point I rush to my phone to make notes (or just pray the idea doesn’t slip away.)

I understood this more clearly recently when Kevin Rogers introduced me to his “Rev, Dev, Mot-ev” model.

The idea is that copywriters need to focus on three aspects of their career to be successful and happy:

  1. Revenue (Rev)
  2. Development (Dev)
  3. Motivation (“Mot-ev”)

Rev and Dev are pretty clear. You can’t run a business without generating revenue and developing – and then honing – a skillset.

However, Dev and Mot-ev sometimes intertwine with one another…

For example, writing to my mailing list every day might be considered both Dev and Mot-ev.

As you progress along the various stages of your career, motivation becomes a larger factor than the others. Revenue is no longer a real concern, and you’re comfortable with your skillset (although you should always be trying to develop new skills!)

Motivation often involves learning new skills outside of copywriting…

As well as exercising, writing for pleasure, resting…

Things that most people wouldn’t normally account for as “work”.

But in many ways, “Mot-ev” is the most important aspect of a copywriter’s work.

Because it’s within this rest space that the mind relaxes.

Ideas form.

And the “real” work gets done.
