A playground for the bots šŸ¤–

Let me preface this whole email (rant) with an important admission:

I HATE social media.

Always have. Always will.

But, unfortunately ā€“ at least to a small degree ā€“ itā€™s necessary for most of us.

For example, the only reason I still have an Instagram account is so I can send reels and memes to friends.

I keep Facebook because I need an account to use Ads Manager.

And Iā€™ve been forcing myself to use LinkedIn (for networking and all that jazz.)

Neverthelessā€¦

I Hate it. HATE it all.

And recently, Iā€™ve started to hate it even moreā€¦

Itā€™s my own fault. I spent too much time on LinkedInā€¦

See, I wanted to have one social account I could show up on.

To prove, if nothing else, that Iā€™m a real person.

But it seems Iā€™m one of the few ā€œreal peopleā€ on the siteā€¦

Anyone whoā€™s spent time recently on LinkedIn will relate to this:

The absolute horror of people writing mindless posts with AI.

And even WORSE.

Commenting on posts with AI.

šŸ¤®

Sometimes it feels like there are no humans on the site.

Just bots spitting out a load of turgid nonsense.

And I can kind of understand making a long-form post with AI on LinkedIn. Writing is hard and creating content/copy is not for everyone.

But commenting with AI?

Thatā€™s a new level of brainlessness.

Because AI is very recognisable.

(Mostly because itā€™s getting dumber.)

And look, Iā€™m not totally anti-AI.

Itā€™s definitely a useful research tool (when itā€™s not lying its pants off.)

But for writing, the output is puke-inducing.

ā€œUnlock yourā€¦ā€

ā€œElevate yourā€¦ā€

ā€œ...top-notchā€¦ā€

Nobody writes that kind of clichƩd crap.

So, please DONā€™T write content/copy with AI.

Even if you donā€™t think you write well, youā€™ll do a better job than the bots.

Your ā€œhumannessā€ will be less off-putting than the mechanical-sounding crap AI spews out on command on social media.

I highlighted "social" for a reason.

Humans are social creatures.

If there are only bots on social media....

Does it become a playground for robots?

A place where the AI hangs out and socialises when the humans arenā€™t around? Creepy.

And look, if youā€™re really serious about your messaging and your voice, hire a professional.

It doesnā€™t need to be me (just make sure to vet whoever you hire!)

And if you did want to work with me, that would be cool too.

At the very worst, youā€™ll be guaranteed human copy, no matter what.

Do copywriters have a charmed life? After all, thereā€™s only so many hours that anyone can engage in a creative act per day. Which means most of us can only spend 3-5 hours a day writing before we start seeing diminishing returns. But appearances can be very deceiving. First of all ā€“ that assumes we only write and donā€™t have to worry about ALL the other aspects of running a business: admin, client calls, strategy, networking, etc. And although there are only so many hours we can spend writingā€¦...

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, I do Pilates in an attempt to fix my seemingly-chronic back issues. As well as helping my back issues, I find the class pretty calming. I usually spend the next few hours in my Zen happy place. After yesterdayā€™s class, I had to make quick stop in the supermarket before going back to my apartment. I was still in a spaced-out, post-pilates state. While queueing for the checkout, I noticed some disturbance. The queue was in standstill. There were raised voices....

As promised, Iā€™m back today with my second major takeaway from the most important copywriting event of the year: The Great Copywriting Reset (Did I mention I was featured as a guest expert at this super prestigious event? I did? Okay, just making sure šŸ˜‰) Letā€™s buckle in. The second day of the event focused on the clients who hire top talent. It featured some huge businesses who made one thing clear ā€“ that hiring a skilled copywriter is one of the best investments a business can make in its...
