I almost had a Fist Fight at the Supermarket

On Tuesday and Thursday mornings, I do Pilates in an attempt to fix my seemingly-chronic back issues.

As well as helping my back issues, I find the class pretty calming. I usually spend the next few hours in my Zen happy place.

After yesterday’s class, I had to make quick stop in the supermarket before going back to my apartment.

I was still in a spaced-out, post-pilates state.

While queueing for the checkout, I noticed some disturbance.

The queue was in standstill. There were raised voices. Angry gestures.

“It’s just Spain,” I reminded myself. “It’s normal.”

But as the intensity of the shouting increased, I realised that this was a little too extreme – even by Spanish standards.

Unlike the general populace, I have an unfortunate – and insatiable – curiosity for this kind of drama.

So while most of the zombie bystanders in front of me were looking at the ground….

I had to see what was going on.

I pushed my way to the front of the queue.

And was sickened by what I saw.

A man was hurling abuse at the woman behind the counter.

He must have been about forty. A scrawny little man – about a head shorter than me – wearing a Dragon Ball Z t-shirt. His lip was curved into a sneer and he was clearly enjoying the role of antagonist.

This kind of behaviour disgusts me.

What’s more, I was impatient and just wanted to get home.

Feeling my adrenaline surge, I snapped myself out of my pilates-induced reverie.

Moving closer to him...

I cleared my throat...

And roared in his face:

“Just LEAVE”

Stunned to silence, he turned to me in shock.

It seems he hadn’t expected any interruptions.

He mightn’t have understood my English, but the message (“leave”) was clear.

For a second I thought he was going to hit me.

I could see him sizing me up.

But he seemed to quickly realise how bad an idea that would have been.

(More than twenty years of boxing and Jiu-Jitsu has made me pretty formidable in these situations.)

He grabbed his shopping – a bag of beer cans – and backed out of the shop, still hurling abuse.

The cashier looked shaken, but went back to scanning people through.

This just shows…

You can never really be prepared for what’s going to happen to you in business from day-to-day…

I doubt the cashier woke up that morning thinking, “wow, I bet I’m going to have a loud, violent confrontation with a customer today.”

That’s why you need to create – and nurture – an insurance policy against any kind of disruption.

For most online businesses, this means building your email list…

Communicating with it regularly…

And selling offers to it.

There are a few ways to get started doing this.

A quick way to start would be to check out my old mentor (and friend) Chris “Orzy” Orzechowski’s webinar on October 15th:

5 Steps To A Million-Dollar List

(I personally won’t be able to attend live, but I WILL be catching up on the recordings – everyone can learn something from Chris’s years of frontline experience.)

Basically, he’s revealing strategies you can use to:

  • grow your list fast
  • monetise it effectively
  • build a bigger, more profitable business with email

It costs nothing to attend the webinar.

But there is one catch:

He’s limiting the numbers to ensure a small – but engaged – list of attendees.

I wouldn’t hang around too long before registering.

Register here.

Let me preface this whole email (rant) with an important admission: I HATE social media. Always have. Always will. But, unfortunately – at least to a small degree – it’s necessary for most of us. For example, the only reason I still have an Instagram account is so I can send reels and memes to friends. I keep Facebook because I need an account to use Ads Manager. And I’ve been forcing myself to use LinkedIn (for networking and all that jazz.) Nevertheless… I Hate it. HATE it all. And...

Do copywriters have a charmed life? After all, there’s only so many hours that anyone can engage in a creative act per day. Which means most of us can only spend 3-5 hours a day writing before we start seeing diminishing returns. But appearances can be very deceiving. First of all – that assumes we only write and don’t have to worry about ALL the other aspects of running a business: admin, client calls, strategy, networking, etc. And although there are only so many hours we can spend writing…...

As promised, I’m back today with my second major takeaway from the most important copywriting event of the year: The Great Copywriting Reset (Did I mention I was featured as a guest expert at this super prestigious event? I did? Okay, just making sure 😉) Let’s buckle in. The second day of the event focused on the clients who hire top talent. It featured some huge businesses who made one thing clear – that hiring a skilled copywriter is one of the best investments a business can make in its...
